Great Poltavites :

When opening my site and writing about Poltava history, I could not miss the opportunity to make mention of famous Poltavites and celebrated personalities, whose lives are somehow connected with my city. Because, it is people in the first place who shaped history in the past, and who influence right now the course of events, not just merely buildings and occurrences.

Hardly you can meet someone who knows nothing about Nikolai Gogol, Anatoly Lunacharsky, Vladimir Korolenko, Symon Petliura, priest Gapon.

There are many other names to be listed here, but I post a detailed info about them later on. I want to mention only most distinguished countrymen according to their field of activity: Statesmen, public figures, clergy, military authorities: Anatoly Lunacharsky, Symon Petliura, priest Gapon, Sydir Kovpak and Podgorny. Scientists: Yuri Kondratyuk, Mikhail Ostrogradsky, Boris Grekov, Alexander Zasyadko, Zubkovsky, Mykhailo Drahomanov, Duhov, Zerov and others. Writers and poets: Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Marusia Churai, Oles Honchar, Pavlo Zahrebelnyi, Yevhen Hrebinka, Hryhorii Skovoroda, Vasyl Symonenko, Kovinka, Tyutyunnik, Panas Myrny. Musician and theatre actors: Dunaevsky, Zadneprovsky, Holodnaya, Timoshenko, Gercyk, Vil'shansky, Staricky, Lysenko, Mayboroda…. Painters, sculptors and architects: Myasoedov – father and son, Pozen, Dyachenko, Gavrilko, Golovko, Borovikovsky, Ksenz, Bashkirceva and others.

The Great Battle of Poltava had a strong impact on power balance in the world, and it praised “the glorious Russian weaponry”. I've tried to cover as much as possible of Poltava history, in sections - Poltava history and historical places of the city.

I have already mentioned some of the famous Poltavites of the past. But what about nowadays? Well, Raisa Kirichenko, Natalie May,“Krayane” and «Freestyle» (with Sergey Kuznecov, Nina Kirso, Sergey Ganja). Recently Andrej Danilko (Verka Serduchka) has joined the city's top persons list. The title “Honourable citizen of Poltava” has been bestowed before to Joseph Kobzon,(for accomplishments in developing culture, art and spirituality in Poltava), Leonid Kuchma (for once being the president); and to scientist and public figures as well: Alexandr Onischenko, Nikolay Skripnikov, Vasiliy Tatsy.
